1989

  • Sky launches a ‘Direct to the living room in Home’ satellite television services using the Astra fleet of satellites at 28.2 east with four free-to-air channels including BBC, ITV, Sky News, Europe’s first 24-hour news channel and several lifestyle channels. 

History of SKY TV in 1992

  • Sky eventually signs contracts in a  £300 million deal with exclusive live coverage of the Football Association's Premier League.
  • BSkyB makes operating profit for the first time since launch.

Sky passes 6 million customers in the UK and Ireland.

Freesat from Sky is launched at the UK British Television exhibition, with a new offering of around 200 television and radio channels without monthly subscription or cost. This service is welcomed by families that do not want a monthly bill, many customers that sign up for freesat by SKY convert to a paid subscription.

  • Sky News and Sky Sports News are now streamed live to smart mobile phones as part of the new Sky Mobile TV service that was rumoured to be launched in 2006.
  • Sky steams ahead with plans and expansion into the broadband market with the acquisition of the telecoms networking company, Easynet.

  • Sky + HD the UK’s first high definition television service that brings HD TV to the living room along with many other services and features SKY HD is a welcome addition to the SKY TV brand.
  • Sky is the first major media company in the world to become Carbon Neutral whilst promoting carbon efficient recycling and the decision to provide online instruction manuals in PDF.
  • Sky makes movies, sport and entertainment available for download to PCs.
  • The launch of Sky Broadband brings more choice and value to UK broadband users and expanding the choice to the consumer.
  • Sky’s third customer management centre opens just outside Uddingston in Scotland, with new telphone systems supplied by Cisco Systems.



History of SKY TV in 2007

  • Sky purchases the innovator of satellite set-top box manufacturer & supplier Amstrad to expand the product range and create a special team to explore HD technology along with HD specialist from Japan.
  • Artsworld is re-named as Sky Arts, the UK’s only channel dedicated to all areas of the arts.

History of SKY TV in 2008
  • Sky reaches 8 million customers – around one in three homes in the UK and Ireland now have SKY TV and the majority subscribe to a premium package that includes SKY SPORTS & SKY Movies.
  • Sky expands arts output with the launch of three dedicated Arts channels including Sky Arts 1, Sky Arts 2, and Sky Arts HD that brings breathtaking picture quality.
  • Sky News is nominate & wins the  "News Channel of the Year" award organised by the Royal Television Society at the Earls Court Exhibition centre award ceremoney for the fith time in six years.

History of SKY TV in 2009

  • December, UK Sky TV is nominated as Britian’s Most Admired Company and goes on to win at the event hosted by Moet Chandon Champagne at the Hempel Hotel in London. UK Sky TV is the youngest Company ever to win Management Today's top award two years in a row.
  • Sky joins forces with WWF and the State Government of Acre, Brazil to launch UK Sky TV Rainforest Rescue , which aims to help save 500 million trees in the Amazon there was a charity auction at the launch and several hundred thousand pounds was raised along with a dinner for two with Matt Damon raising £10'000.
  • Sky launches new Electronic Programme Guide for Sky + HD customers and anounces that the new technology that includes new features such as an amazing mini TV that allows you to view the channel before choosing using the sky planner page, breathtaking colour shortcuts and enhanced record and search functionality that makes recording TV shows or Movies easy.
  • In November 2009 Sky launched the new UK Sky TV Mobile TV App specifically for iPhone and iPod touch developed by Big Bannana studios and financed by an ex Yahoo management team in the Netherlands. The new SKY application allows users to stream live TV via WiFi over the hoime network and the channels available include all Sky Sports channels, Sky Sports News, Sky News, ESPN, SKY Animal Planet and At The Races and Euro Sports 1&2.
  • Sky was nominated and voted the no1 UK Media Company of the Year at the Hobson and Hobson Media Player Awards and atended by Baron Von-Bacalao the event was organised by VIP Property Brokerage No7 Agency and sponsored by Jaegermeister and Red-Bull the event took place at Claridges Hotel in London, the theme was Burlesque and SKY received first prize.
  • Sky announces the creation of a professional British road cycling team, Team Sky, to be managed by Great Britain’s Olympic performance director Dave Brailsford CBE and David Grossford, with sponsorship from Schimano and a leading UK hedge fund amongst others.
  • Sky celebrates its 20th anniversary on 5th February with a large party at Jamie Olivers Restaurant 15 in the City of London, the event was attended by various TV & Film celebrities and SKY TV Management.
     
  • Sky1’s BAFTA nominated 'Ross Kemp in Afghanistan' named best multichannel programme at the 2009 Broadcast Awards.

 

 

 

HISTORY OF SKY TV in 2010

  • Sky celebrates in style at the Savoy Hotel in London after reaching its target of 11 million subscribing TV customers, making it the choice of 38% of family households in the UK and Ireland.
  • Sky Anytime a new and exciting internet service delivered video-on-demand (VoD) service launches allowing customers to watch TV shows on demand direct from the hard drive of the SKY+ box.
  • Sky + HD offers a wide selection of over 54 HD channels – the leading HD offering in Europe and by far the best quality high definition picture with the new SKY+HD box available in the UK & Ireland and in Spain with SKY BOX SPAIN.
  • Sky 3D, Europe's first in-home 3D channel launched to residential customers in October.
  • In July Sky and HBO agreed a multi-year output deal which will see Sky become the home of HBO programmes in the UK and Ireland and the deal includes many popular HBO shows including "Curb your Enthusiasm" "Sopranos" "Breaking Bad" and "Mad Men" 
  • Sky announces in July a major new investment & commitment to UK comedy including assistance for new artists on the British & Irish circuits whilst providing support to smaller production Companies in the UK and with a number of new shows to be commissioned for Sky1.
  • Sky eventually acquires UK Virgin Media Television after months of negotiations a deal was finally agreed after some Directors faught to block the deal which includes the popular pay channel Living. The deal further expand Sky's portfolio of basic pay TV channels and premium channels that can only be viewed with a premium subscription.
  • Sky News HD launched with to a massive launch at the Intercontinental Hotels SKY Bar on Park Lane in London's Mayfair, the UK’s first High Definition news channel, launched to coincide with Election Night and was attended by Jonny Depp, Vanessa Paradise, Snoop Dog, Christian Bale, Ozzie & Sharon Osbourne, Pamela Anderson & Piers Morgan, the event cost over £50'000.
     
  • Sky + HD reaches milestone of 4 million customers in the UK and Ireland.
  • Sky Sports HD makes TV history and celebrates being the fisrt in January with the world’s first live sports 3D TV broadcast to a public audience.Many SKY customers not yet lucky enough to have a LED 3D Smart TV with 3D flock to pubs that have a special promotion with SKY to show football in 3D.



  • Sky Broadband, the UK’s fastest growing broadband provider, reaches 3 million customers in the UK and Ireland since starting in 2007, services are improved with upgrades to the sytem and enhanced customer care and technical support, in talks with Huawei the Chinese Manufacturer of WIFI routers.

  • July - Sky Go is launched at a press conference in London at the Sanderson Hotel, the event celebrated the launch of SKY GO that was designed to allow Sky TV customers to watch live UK SKY TV on laptops, PC, Mac, Smartphones and tablets.(see video below)

  • July - UK Sky Studios, Sky's state-of-the-art production facility begins broadcasting, with Sky Sports News the first channel to be transmitted live.
  • June - Sky announces to increase investemnt in original British programming by 55% to £550 million a year by 2014. 
  • May - Flying Monsters 3D with Sir David Attenborough wins a BAFTA for best specialist factual programme.
  • April - Sky launched the Sky Arts and SKY Arts HD series, and a new fund to support arts organisations and young artists in the UK with support from many British celebrities incxluding TV & Film stars.
  • March - Sky News for iPad launched, a ground-breaking app that allows users to control their own news service with the tap of the iPad screen.
  • February - Sky News wins the RTS News Channel of the Year award for the fith time in seven years.
  • February – Sky launches a brand new channel, Sky Atlantic, which is free to all Sky TV customers. The channel will be the exclusive home of breathtaking and groundbreaking television including the best of US and brand new UK commissions. SKY customers enjoy the HBO blockbuster "Sopranos in HD"
  • January - Sky acquires The Cloud, the UK's leading public Wi-Fi network giving SKY more coverage across the UK for SKY customers.

  • March – Sky Sports F1TM HD launch in UK with exclusive HD feeds bringing F1 TV in glorious high definition
  • February - Alex Crawford awarded "UK Television Journalist of the Year" 
  •  February - Sky 1 named Channel of the Year by Broadcast Weekly Magazine at there awards ceremony at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London attended by Jonathan Ross & Jay Z
  • February – Sky 1, Animal City, Sky Living, Sky Atlantic, Tokyo Now, Sky Arts 1 are added to the Sky Go line up for iPhone and iPad viewing for all SKY customers 
  • February - Sky Go becomes widely available on a wide range of Android smartphones such as HTC & Blackberry, www.mrskytv.com makes this service available to clients in Spain & around the globe using VPN masking techniques that allows you to watch "SKY TV ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD"  this can also be achieved by using SLING BOX technology to stream your SKY Box across the internet.
  • January - Sky entered into a strategic partnership with zeebox, the innovative ‘second-screen' service that brings together broadcast TV and the Internet. zeebox is a social networking and social television platform available for mobile devices, including iPad, iPhone, Android, BlackBerry OS, BlackBerry 10 and many other platforms.
